Youth unemployment soaring poverty levels
Solwezi, March 13, 2013, ZANIS…. The Zambia Development Agency-ZDA in the
north western province has cited youth unemployment as a major contributor to poverty in the country.
ZDA coordinator for the north western province James Malala says youths have limited
access to employment in the formal sector because they lack the essential and necessary skills.
He said this when he officiated at this year’s Youth day cerebrations
organized by Barrick Lumwana mine held at Lumwana west basic school in
Solwezi yesterday.
Mr. Malala explained that most college and university graduates
are unable to find employment because most of them lack
even the basic practical business skills and knowledge.
He applauded Barrick Lumwana for coming up initiatives aimed at
developing local contractors in conjunction with the Lumwana community
Business Association.
And speaking at the same function, Barrick Lumwana Mine Managing
Director Boyd Timler in a speech read on his behalf by Lumwana Mine
Sustainability Manager Brenda Tambatamba urged the youths in Lumwana
to be enterprising if they were to meaningfully develop their lives.
Mr. Timler said this year’s youth day theme encourages creativity and
a positive attitude within youths so as to enable them grasp
opportunities offered by lumwana and beyond.
