Government committed to address issues affecting women

Mansa, March 8, ZANIS ———-Government says there is need to address the social and economic development challenges that women face if the country is to develop.


Local government and Housing Minister Emerine Kabanshi says social and economic development cannot be achieved without the active participation of women at all levels.


The Local Government and Housing Minister said the Patriotic Front government has accelerated the promotion of gender equality and the participation of women in decision making.


She said Zambia can today boost of being among the top countries in the world to have appointed a woman Inspector General of police describing it as a landmark achievement towards the achievement of women representation.


Ms Kabanshi said this when she officiated at this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration in Mansa where hundreds of women turned up to commemorate their day at Kaole stadium.


Ms Kabanshi also said as part of the decentralized policy government has launched the development of roads infrastructure through the link Zambia 8000 which will make service delivery in sectors such as health, education and agriculture ease and affordable especially to the women who are disadvantaged.


She commended parliament for allocating more resources to the Ministry of Gender and Child Development in this year’s budget saying the allocation has seen more women clubs across the country benefiting from the allocation.


The Local Government and Housing Minister has since called on the people of Luapula to focus on the achievements that men and women have scored in creating a conducive environment to work together for a better Zambia.


Speaking earlier Luapula province Permanent Secretary Mbololwa Muyaba said the promotion of women’s rights have progressed over time.


Mrs Muyaba said the global recognition of women is encouraging and commended the women in Luapula province for their cooperation.


And Luapula province Minister Brigadier General Benson Kapaya congratulated women for overwhelmingly attending the International Women’s Day Celebration.
