Civic leader calls for urgent pontoon use

Kabompo, March 7, ZANIS —— A civic leader has called on the government to speed up completion of putting up a pontoon at Kamavonge ferry point on the Kabompo river to enable expectant mothers on the eastern bank of the crocodile infested Kabompo river access health services at Kabompo district hospital on the west.

Kabompo Ward Councillor Janet Kaputula made the call in an interview with ZANIS in Kabompo today.

Ms Kaputula said since ESCO delivered an old pontoon at the Kamavonge ferry point in pieces in November last year there has been delays in assembling and putting it on the river to start operations.

She said she was not happy that people at Kamavonge ferry point were risking their lives in crossing the river in canoes to access medical services at Kabompo district hospital.

On January 29,this year North-Western Province Permanent Secretary Augustine Seyuba directed the District Council Secretary Francis Nkoma to speed the putting of the pontoon on the river to enable people on the eastern bank to access government services in Kabompo town which is situated on the west bank.

When contacted Mr Nkoma told ZANIS that a contractor would soon be on the site to assemble and put the pontoon on the river but it was not a job to be done just in one week because the pieces of the old pontoon brought from Kapiri-Mposhi needed major rehabilitation.
