ZAMBIA is among seven countries which will benefit from the US$3 million (about K16 billion or KR16 million) per year being dangled by world tennis ace, Roger Federer, for educational projects.
Federer, the record holder of 17 grand slam titles, through his foundation wants to improve the quality of education in Zambia and other nations.
Apart from Zambia, other countries to reap from the Roger Federer Foundation are South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ethiopia and Federer’s home country, Switzerland.
Marking the 10th anniversary of his foundation this week, Federer told Reuters in South Africa that having travelled the world, he had seen poor countries where people were struggling to get education.
The Swiss tennis star said he had always liked the idea of education because in the world, going to school was the most important thing.
“When I travelled the world, I definitely saw poor countries, people who told me it was so hard for them to get an education.
“I always liked the idea of education because in our world, going to school is the most normal thing in the world. We sometimes forget what a privilege it is to go to school,” Federer, who was visiting two pre-schools in South Africa’s Limpopo Province with his mother said.
Apart from spending US$3 million per year on educational projects, the Roger Federer Foundation supports 40 pre-schools.
Over 50,000 children benefited from the foundation’s efforts in 2012 to improve quality education in pre-schools and primary schools.
Federer is born of a Swiss father and South African mother.
