Media challenged to be objective ahead of the Mpongwe polls
Kitwe, February 18th, 2013, ZANIS — Democratic Governance and Human Rights Advocates (DEGHA) National Co-coordinator Gerald Mutelo has challenged the medial to give fair and equal coverage to all political parties taking part in the Mpongwe by-election.
Mr. Mutelo has observed that some media institutions are not covering some political parties participating in the ongoing Mpongwe Parliamentary by-election campaigns.
He has noted that it was important for the media to give fair and equal coverage to all participating parties to enable the electorates make informed decisions before casting their vote on their polling day.
ZANIS reports that the DEGHA National Co-coordinator said this in a press statement released in Kitwe today.
Mr. Mutelo commended the Catholic Church in Mpongwe for giving electoral Commission of Zambia officials time to educate their members during church services s on the importance of peaceful elections and the negative effects of electoral violence.
He appealed on other churches and civil society organizations in the area to emulate the Catholic Church to promote smooth and peaceful elections.
Meanwhile Mr. Mutelo has appealed to the people of Mpongwe to turn up in large numbers for the election and vote objectively.
He also advised the candidates in the by-election to avoid character assassination, insults and capitalizing on personal issues in their campaigns but to focus of developmental issues.
He further urged the participating candidates to accept the results of the elections after the polls.
Mr. Mutelo however said that so far the campaigns in Mpongwe are peaceful a situation he said was likely to lead to peaceful, free and fair elections.
The electorate in Mpongwe constituency go to the polls on the 28th, February 2013, to elect their preferred parliamentary representative.
This follows the resignation of MMD’s Gabriel Namulambe who joined the ruling Patriotic Front.
Mr. Namulambe is re-contesting the seat under the PF ticket along with MMD’s Miniver Mutesa and Rabson Chilufya of the United Party for National Development UPND.
Others contesting the seat are Kenny Kuveya of UNIP and Regan Ndhlovu of NAREP.
