GOVERNMENT has signed contracts with two Zambian companies to construct a modern market and an international bus terminus in Livingstone at a cost of KR70 million (K70 billion).
This is part of preparations for the August 2013 United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly.
GES Architects would construct a modern market in the town centre at a cost of KR28.5 million (K28.5 billion) while Ndilila
Associates would construct an international bus terminus at Villa Grounds at a cost of KR41.5 million (K41.5 billion).
Southern Province Permanent Secretary Chileshe Mulenga signed on behalf of the Government, while Ndilila Associates director Francis Ndilila and GES representative Peter Kapala signed on behalf of their companies.
Dr Mulenga said the two contracts were awarded on merit.
He said the awarding of contracts to the two Zambian firms showed that Government had confidence in local companies.
Dr Mulenga said the two projects were urgent and that Government expected the works to be completed by July.
He said Government would ensure that the resources for the two projects were made available to ensure that works were done accordingly.
At the same function, Dr Ndilila said his firm was grateful to be awarded a contract at an important moment when Zambia was expected to showcase itself and showcase Livingstone during the UNWTO General Assembly.
He said his team had already started working because the time table was tight and pledged to deliver a good project to the city of Livingstone.
Mr Kapala said all things being equal, his team would deliver a high quality product in good time.
Livingstone City Council director of engineering Benny Chiyesu said the local authority would ensure that the works were closely monitored.
