———-Construction of the KR 53.8 million Chirundu-Chiawa Bridge on the Kafue River has commenced.
Speaking before touring the site of the bridge, Lusaka Province Minister, Freedom Sikazwe, appealed to the contractor to construct a bridge that will stand the test of time.
Mr Sikazwe urged the contractor to take advantage of lack of floods in the area to make sure works progress as per programme.
He said the contractor should prove to government and the people in the area that they can do a professional work on the bridge.
Mr Sikazwe said government is desperate because there is no time left to complete the project.
He advised the contractor to keep in mind that the money they are using is tax payers’ which should be used wisely.
Mr Sikazwe said the current government is practical and people in the area need to benefit from the works of the bridge.
And Chirundu District Commissioner, Maxwel Syamalimba, appealed to the contractor to desist from abusing workers.
He also urged the employers to pay their workers government minimum wage because government and all employers must comply.
The bridge, which is being constructed by China Henan, is expected to be completed by January 2014.
