Eastern province to list outstanding schools, teachers

Chipata, February 15, ZANIS —— Eastern Province Education Officer Thomas Mwanza has directed District Education Standards Officers (DESOs) to compile a list of the best and worst performing schools in their districts.

Mr Mwanza said the list should include the worst and best performing subject teachers.

Mr Mwanza explained that this will help the Ministry of Education to monitor and assist teachers on how to improve in their subjects.

The directive comes following the province’s poor performance in grade nine where close to 13,000 pupils out of 24,000 failed to make it to grade10.

Mr Mwanza told the DESOs during a review and planning workshop that government officials at the Provincial Administration need the report because they are concerned with the bad performance recorded last year.

He said DESOs should ensure that they carry out their monitoring work professionally than sending fear in teachers and later perceiving them as enemies.

The Review and Planning workshop is being held under the theme “Improving Learners’ Performance in 2013- the role of Standard Officers.”
