—The Chipata Municipal Council   has a challenge of garbage collection because some retail and shop owners were dumping refuse at Kapata market instead of at designated dumping sites.

Chipata Town Clerk, Ekan Chingangu, said the authority has been collecting garbage twice a week but the off load was not felt because people were dumping the refuse at the market places.

Mr Chingangu added that although the council entered into an agreement with contractors who collect garbage, people were not interested in paying the KR 50 demanded for the service.

H e was speaking with Zambia News and Information Services in an interview this morning.

He said the service providers have the capacity to collect garbage from townships, bars and retail outlets, adding that with consistency the local authority would keep the environment clean.

And the Town Clerk has appealed to restaurant and retail shop-owners to follow laid down procedures when conducting their business or risk losing their licences.

Mr Chingangu stated that there was provision for restaurants to have a liquor licence, hence making it difficult for the council to identify those that were selling liquor in market place.

He stated that there was need to ensure that customers were limited to one bottle of beer when taking a meal in their restaurant and also for retail shops not to entertain members of the public to be taking drinks from the shops.
