A prisoner from Namwala prison has died while three others have sustained serious injuries after a van they were in with 14 others overturned along the Choma- Namwala road.
A police source, who confirmed the accident to ZANIS in Choma today, said three injured prisoners have been admitted to Namwala district hospital.
According to police, the accident occurred a few kilometres before Naminwe bridge when the Prisons Service van registration number P1041B overturned due to a rear tyre burst.
A female prison officer, who is a Deputy Officer-In-Charge for Namwala state prison, also sustained injuries in the same accident and is admitted to the district hospital.
The prisoners were perched on bags of fertiliser which were being transported to Namwala open prison.
And police in Namwala have arrested a fugitive gunman who has been on the run since November last year after shooting dead a man in the area.
Police told ZANIS in Choma that the fugitive gunman was cornered in Choma after a tip off from members of the public.
Police have also recovered a pistol used in the November murder.
