Chinsali Police officer in charge arrested for defilement

Chinsali police station Officer- in –Charge in Muchinga Province has been arrested for allegedly defiling a minor.

Muchinga Province Police Commissioner RemMy Kajoba confirmed the arrest of Stephen Mwenge to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.

Mr. Kajoba said Mwenge 35, of house number 1 Nakatindi Street in Mayandi township was arrested on friday last week for allegedly defiling a 14 – year-old school girl.

He said that Mwenge who has since been charged with one count of defilement contrary to the laws of Zambia, has been released on police bond and is expected to appear in court today.

The Police Commissioner warned that the Police Service will not protect any officer that will be found on the wrong side of the law adding that as law enforcers they will strive  to follow the law to the latter and ensure that any person regardless of his or her status in society, breaking the laws of the land, is dealt with accordingly.

Meanwhile, Police in Isoka district in Muchinga Province have intercepted about 51 Congolese nationals at Chitipa border on the Zambia and Malawi border.

Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Remmy Kajoba who confirmed the development to ZANIS in Chinsali today said among those intercepted are women and children.

He said that initial investigations had indicated that the Congolese nationals, who are running away from the civil war in that country, entered Zambia through Mpulungu border.

Mr. Kajoba said that law enforcement agencies are currently screening them and promised to give more details later.

Several refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have in the recent past entered Zambia to seek refuge more especially in Luapula Province.
