Soccer fans in Kitwe have expressed mixed feelings over  Zambia’s  1-1 draw against Ethiopia as Zambia opened its defence of the African Cup of Nations trophy in South Africa.

Some fans talked to by ZANIS in Kitwe today said Zambia played a below standard game which is far from what is expected of champions.

One of the soccer fans, Ray Bulaya said he was disappointed that Zambia could not beat Ethiopia which is assumed to be the possible weakest team in the group.

He said Zambia should have done better especially that Ethiopia was down by one man after picking a red card in the first half.

Another fan Evans Lupali said that he was extremely disappointed that Zambia did not win.

Mr Lupali said he had expected an outright victory considering that Zambia was the reigning African champion.

He also observed that there was much disorganization and lack of team work among Zambian players especially in the midfield and defence.

However, a more optimistic supporter, Collins Kangwa said he was happy with the outcome although the team did not gate the required 3 points.

Mr Kangwa said people should not blame the team for the draw because this was just the first game, adding that Zambia can still beat the remaining opponents in the group and proceed to the next round of the tournament and consequently retain the prestigious trophy.

Yesterday Day Zambia opened its AFCON title defence with a game against Ethiopia in which the African champions were held to a 1-1 draw putting all the four teams in group B at the same level with only a point each.

This was after Nigeria and Burkina Faso of the same group also drew with a 1-1 score line.

Zambia’s rejuvenated prolific goal scorer Collins Mbesuma opened the score line shortly before the second half.

But Zambia could not maintain the lead as they conceded a goal in the second half.

The Africa Cup of Nations tournament kicked off on Saturday January 19, in South Africa.
