wo people died on the spot yesterday while 12 others have been admitted to Isoka district hospital in Muchinga province with multiple body injuries after a bus they were travelling in from Tanzania to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) careered off the road and fell on its right side.
Muchinga province Police Commissioner Remmy Kajoba has confirmed the accident in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka this morning.
Mr Kajoba said the accident involving a Tanzanian registered MV Nissan UD bus registration number T526 BAF, driven by an unknown Tanzanian national who is currently on the run, occurred at about 17:00 hours yesterday at Ndeke Village along the Great North Road in Isoka district.
Mr Kajoba explained that the accident happened when the driver of the bus failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the bus which careered off the road and fell on its right side resulting in the death of two passengers on the spot and injuring several others.
He said that the two who have died have been identified as Maheja Salehe, 37, of Tanzania whose 18 months old baby has suffered head injuries and is among those admitted to Isoka district hospital adding that the other deceased passenger has been identified as Bernard Venans, 50, of Congo, DRC.
The bodies of the two are lying at Isoka district hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, a man of Nambuluma in Chinsali district in Muchinga province is battling for his life at Chinsali district hospital after being hit by a vehicle in a hit and run that occurred at Nambuluma / Chinsali turn off last night.
Police who confirmed the incident said the unidentified man has suffered serious head injuries.
