United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema yesterday appeared for mention before chief resident magistrate Joshua Banda in a matter in which he is facing one count of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public.
Mr Hichilema who did not appear in person but through his lawyers had his case adjourned to January 15, 2013 for trial.
Facts before the court are that Mr Hichilema on June 11, 2012 in Lusaka did orally publish statements in which he said, inter alia, that ”PF had signed an agreement for the militia in Sudan to train PF youths to prepare for trouble.
Magistrate Banda granted Mr Hichilema a K30 million cash bail, with two working sureties based in Lusaka and further ordered that his passport be surrendered to the senior clerk of the court.
Meanwhile, Edward Mumbi, 56, also appeared for mention before senior principal magistrate Aridah Chuulu in a case in which he was facing three counts of being in possession of three motor vehicles valued at K250 million suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Particulars of the offence are that Mumbi, of House Number 396 A/8/11 of Lusaka’s Makeni between December 1, 2010 and November 30 this year had in his possession a Mercedes Benz, registration number ALC 6229, Nissan Navara, ABT 5323, and a Mitsubishi Pajero, ALC 6336, properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Magistrate Chuulu said she was still waiting for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how to proceed with the matter.
Trial has since been set for January 28 2013.
And Lusaka lawyer Lewis Chisanga Mosho appeared for mention in a matter in which he is alleged to have stolen more than K1 billion from Shoprite.
Mosho’s case had been adjourned to February 25 for possible commencement of trial.
