The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) has praised government for its support during the 506 surgeries that were conducted to commemorate Zambia’s golden jubilee.

UTH public relations manager Mwenya Mulenga revealed that the institution exceeded its target of 400 surgeries within 10 days during its ‘golden jubilee operation’because of the support that the Ministry of Health rendered.

Mr. Mulenga explained that due to members of the public complaining about the long list of surgical treatment, UTH thought of celebrating Zambia’s golden jubilee by promptly operating on patients who were in pain as a result of various ailments.

He further said that the operation was conducted to help decongest the hospital considering the challenges it experiences in handling various cases countrywide.

These challenges make people be given many months of appointment to have their surgical treatment done.

Mr. Mulenga told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that UTH will no longer have prolonged appointments as most cases that required surgical treatment were attended to.

He said the surgeries were done in three categories namely children section, maternity and adult section.

Mr. Mulenga has since commended the staff at UTH for their commitment to ensure that the ‘golden Jubilee operation’ was a success.
