MAXWELL Chongo yesterday handed himself over to police in Kafue for assaulting two fellow PF cadres at Bigies Nightclub on Sunday night.

Chongo, who had been on the run since Sunday night, turned himself in around midday.

He has been charged with unlawful wounding and is expected to appear in court this Friday, according to Lusaka Province police commissioner Nelson Phiri.

“I have just gotten in touch with Kafue (police). They have told me that this man has just surrendered himself to the police. Right now, he is at Kafue Police Station, he is being arrested for unlawful wounding using glass. He is expected to appear in court latest Friday,” said Phiri in an interview.
Max’s father, a Mr Chongo, was at the police station seeking police bond for his son.

“Yes, he has been arrested. He brought himself to the police. We are still at the police station sorting out this thing; I cannot comment further,” said Chongo.

Max, a former Big Brother Africa housemate, sliced off the the ear of fellow PF cadre Jonas Sakala with a glass and injured another cadre, Walusha Sakala.

Police spokesperson Charity Munganga-Chanda confirmed on Tuesday that the assault case was being investigated and a detailed statement would be released.

According to Kenneth Nondo, who is the victims’ uncle, and Bigies Nightclub proprietor, Colonel Bernard Sakala, Max allegedly cut Jonas’ left ear when the latter tried to intervene in an altercation between him and the bar tender.

Before slicing Jonas’ ear off, Max also lifted Walasha and threw him to the wall when he tried to explain to him that he needed to pay before he could be served a beer.

Meanwhile, PF secretary general Davis Chama said he is not sure if Max is a member of the PF.

“I don’t know if he is our member, I cannot confirm anything. The PF is a very big party. I don’t even know about the assault case you are referring to. I am ignorant. Unless someone is a senior member or a member of the central committee or he is a provincial chairman. Maybe if I looked at the face, I am not in a position to confirm he is our member,” said Chama. “I haven’t looked at the papers today.”
