DEC seizes 24.1kg of cocaine

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has recorded its highest seizure of cocaine following the arrest of two Zambians and a Tanzanian national for trafficking in 24.1kg of cocaine.
Sydney Mwansa, 32, an Assistant Manager of Taqua Bus Services of Tanzania; Likuta Shaibu Abilahi, 42, a Tanzanian of Mbagra in Dar-es-Salaam and Teddy Matanda, 35, a Taxi Driver of Lusaka’s Matero area have been arrested and jointly charged for trafficking in 24 packets of cocaine weighing 24.1kg.
DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo tells QFM News in a statement that the three suspects were arrested in three different locations which include Intercity Bus Terminals, Matero in Lusaka and Chirundu with the help of the Zambia Police Service.
Ms Katongo says the Commission has also seized two motor vehicles which include a Toyota Corolla and a Golf car from the suspects and that other items seized include a Pistol with 15 rounds ammunition and cellular phones.
She says the suspects are currently in Police custody and will appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, the Commission has in different parts of the country arrested over thirty people for unlawful cultivation and trafficking in cannabis weighing over 1 tonne.
Ms Katongo says those arrested and jointly charged in Central Province include Dariano Siyame, 43, a peasant farmer of Mkushi North, and Maybin Chibuye, 30, a charcoal burner also of Mkushi North for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 475.5kg and trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 12.59kg.
She adds that in Luapula Province, the Commission has arrested Joseph Mwenda, 41, a peasant farmer of Mwanamwende village in Mansa District for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 295.67kg, and Joseph Chishala Mwewa, 45 a peasant farmer of Chama village in Mansa District for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 197.85kg.
The DEC Public Relations Officer says others arrested include Joseph Ndopu, 32, a peasant farmer of Lwanja area in Sesheke District for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 75kg; Jonas Maimbo, 38, a peasant farmer of Namwala for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 50.5kg.
She says all suspects will appear in court soon.
