A group of MMD parliamentarians has called on the party leadership to convene a convention by April, to elect new leaders ahead of the August 11, general election.

In a statement released to ZNBC in Lusaka, the MMD Parliamentarians have argued that their call for a convention is in line with the provisions of the party constitution.

They have rejected a National Executive Committee resolution that deferred the convention to 2017.

But MMD Deputy National Secretary Winnie Zaloumis has maintained that the NEC resolution is binding.

And the MMD Northern Province Executive Committee has disowned parliamentarians pushing for a convention.

MMD Northern Province Information Secretary Cephas Zasales has announced that the committee will rally behind the leadership of Party president Nevers Mumba.
