A 38-YEAR-OLD man of Lusaka has shot dead his lover before turning the gun on himself, blowing his head off after a quarrel.
Lusaka Province commissioner of police Nelson Phiri and police spokesperson Charity Chanda confirmed this in separate interviews in Lusaka yesterday.
Mr Phiri identified the deceased as Julie Chalindiwa and Noel Lizunga.
“The incident happened around 21:00 hours on Friday, January 22, 2015, in Matero. The couple picked up a quarrel and in the process, the man shot his lover.
“He afterwards pointed the gun at himself and shot himself in the head,” he said.
Mr Phiri said that the couple died on the spot.
And Mrs Chanda said Mr Lizunga allegedly shot Ms Chalindiwa in the chest and abdomen using a pistol which had nine rounds of ammunition.
“The bodies of the two deceased persons are at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). The shooting happened at a family bar in Matero,” she said.
Meanwhile, a relative of Ms Chalindiwa, who sought anonymity, said Mr Lizunga allegedly followed his lover to her friend’s place in Matero and allegedly accused her of being boastful because she was pretty.
“She had gone to visit her friend in Matero after she knocked off from work. He made a lot of accusations that caused the two to start quarrelling in the presence of Julie’s friend, who was present when Mr Lizunga shot her and later shot himself,” the relative said.
Ms Chalindiwa is survived by three children.
Meanwhile, police in Lusaka have picked up a body of an unidentified woman in Kanyama township.
Mr Phiri said that the body was found with injuries and that police suspect foul play.
“Investigations have been instituted and the body is in the University Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting identification,” Mr Phiri said.
