TWENTY unidentified men yesterday gang-raped a 27-year-old Lusaka woman who was abducted from the Zambia Assemblies of God Church in Kabwata after overnight New Year prayers. The woman of Kamwala South, whose identity has been withheld, was taken to the University Teaching Hospital by church members after a Good Samaritan took her there. In an interview, the woman narrated that on Thursday around 21:00 hours, she went for overnight prayers at ZAOGA in Kabwata.
She said after prayers ended around 04:45 hours, she left the church building and went to the gate to look for the person she was with the previous night so that they could go home. “It was around 04:45 hours; I went to look for the person I went to church with. As I stood by the gate looking for my friend, I saw men come and put a red cloth in my mouth and bundled me in a Toyota Corrola, there were five men,” she recalled.
“They took me to the railway line in Kamwala and there, I found 15 other men and they said ‘welcome mama’ but I did not answer them.” She said later, one of the men asked who was going to be first to have sex with her and the driver of the vehicle volunteered to do that, saying he needed to go and work since it was already morning. “Then one man held my leg, another one my other leg, another one held my hand and the other hand. Altogether they were four. One of them got the cloth and put in my mouth. Then the driver had sex with me first and the rest of them took turns on me, the last one to have sex with me was the man who held one of my hands,” the woman said. She said when they finished raping her, one of the men asked her to count them. “When they finished having sex with me, they said ‘count us, how many are we?’
I told them they were 19 and together with the driver 20. Then they said, ‘Since we have used her, let’s kill her’ and others said, ‘No just leave her’,” she said. The victim said later, a man showed up and when they saw him, they all ran away. She said she got scared as she thought even the other man who showed up was going to rape her, but he instead offered to help her.
The woman said the man took her back to her church and some church members went with her to Kabwata Police Station where they reported the incident. She said after obtaining a police report, they rushed her to UTH. The victim said she would be able to identify one of the men who held her right hand and raped her last, because it was no longer dark. The woman said the men grabbed her cell phone and K200, leaving her with a SIM card.
“I want the police to arrest these men and send them to court so that they can be sentenced to life imprisonment. They did not even use condoms, so the possibility of getting diseases from all those men who used me is very high,” said the woman.
