Kabwe to have shopping mall

DISCUSSIONS between Heriot Property Development Limited and Kabwe Municipal Council to construct a first ever shopping mall are still on course.
In an interview on Tuesday, Kabwe town clerk Ronald Daka said the shopping mall will be built on land located near Zambia China Mulungushi Textiles Joint Venture (ZCMT-JV) plant.
Mr Daka said plans for the shopping mall have reached an advanced stage and project will soon be tabled before a full council meeting on December 23.
“We are planning to start building a mall just opposite ZCMT-JV. This land belonged to Mulungushi textiles but was divided and set for the construction of a shopping mall,” he said.
Recently, Kabwe Central Member of Parliament James Kapyanga said Heriot Property Development Limited of South Africa has been approached to develop the shopping mall at the proposed site.
“This will be one of the biggest shopping malls and discussions have been progressing well with Heriot Property Development Limited. Heriot Property Development Limited is the firm which constructed [Ndola’s] Kafubu Mall and [Kitwe’s] Mukuba,” Mr Kapyanga said.
Mr Kapyanga said the facility is expected to create jobs, add value to the national economy and boost infrastructure development.
In a separate interview, Heriot chief executive officer Steven Herring said the company is awaiting a conclusion of talks to pave way for the project.
“We have found that people need shopping malls. They need shops where to buy different things and they do not need to travel long distances to do their shopping,” Mr Herring said.
