THE Drug Enforcement Commission has arrested the head teacher of Chawama Basic School in Lusaka for money laundering involving over K140,000.

DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo stated yesterday that Evelyn Mubanga Chitalu had been arrested and charged with theft by public servant, destroying of evidence and money laundering.

Katongo stated that it was alleged that Chitalu, in her capacity as head teacher of Chawama Basic School, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown between July 2010 and March 2015, stole K147,987 public funds received from school fees, rentals and examination centre fees.

She stated that it was also alleged that Chitalu, 56 without authority destroyed some accounting documents that were in her possession relating to the transactions between the school and members of the public.

“One motor vehicle and a total of K140,000 in bank accounts for Chitalu have been seized as property believed to be proceeds of crime. The accused has been released on police bond and will appear in court soon,” stated Katongo.
