STRIKER Collins Mbesuma says his appointment as Mpumalanga Black Aces skipper will motivate him to achieve success at both club and national team level.
Mbesuma, who holds the South Africa Premier Soccer League scoring record with 35 goals, said in an interview from Johannesburg yesterday that the appointment has come at the right time.
The burly striker has scored six goals for Aces this season in 11 appearances.
He is also enjoying success with the national team and was influential in helping the Chipolopolo reach the group stage of the 2018 Russia World qualifiers.
Mbesuma and Zesco United striker Winston Kalengo contributed a goal apiece in a 2-1 win over Kenya in the 2017 Gabon Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match in Nairobi.
“It is a proud moment for me. I know it’s a big responsibility and an honour to be named captain but, together with my team-mates, I know we have the spirit and commitment to achieve success this season and to fulfil our potential,” he said.
The former Roan United player’s target is to help Aces finish among the top four this season.
Aces are third on the log with 21 points, five behind surprise leaders Bidvest Wits.
According to the club’s website, Aces coach Ertugral Muhsin is confident Mbesuma’s experience will help them win trophies.
“I never put any doubt on his commitment to the club, and that was one of the reasons [he has been made captain]. He has the leadership qualities. He has experience and the confidence of the rest of the team,” Ertugral said.
The Turkish coach also coached Mbesuma at another Absa Premiershipside Golden Arrows in 2010.
