The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) says the proposed increase in electricity tariffs by ZESCO is ill-timed considering the current prevailing economic situation in the country.
ZACA publicity and information officer Juba Sakala says the increase in tariffs will negatively affect consumers who are already grappling with the high cost of living.
He says ZESCO should instead consider reducing the percentage of increase from the proposed 300 to 50 percent in order to have a win-win situation.
Mr Sakala states that Zambians have endured sustained price increases and that the increase in electricity tariffs will put further pressure on the spending power of the citizenry already grappling with price rises in mealie meal, fuel and other general commodities.
