AIRTEL Networks Zambia Plc has provided free internet connectivity to three more digital hubs in schools in Chirundu, Kabwe and Siavonga under its corporate social responsibility.

Airtel Zambia managing director Peter Correia said the high speed broadband access provided by Airtel guarantees teachers and students limitless new educational opportunities.

In a press statement Mr Correia said ICT education was now a requirement for all schools in Zambia, and that Airtel remained committed to supporting the Government agenda in providing ‘ICTs for all’ through the Ministry of Education.

He said the provision of internet connectivity was part of an ongoing partnership with the British Council under the connecting classrooms project where a total of 15 digital hubs would access free internet by the end of March next year. So far more than 5000 pupils from the five connected schools were benefiting from the project.

“Digital Hubs in schools serve as ICT centres for not just teachers and pupils but also for the wider communities,

“We would like to emphasise that Airtel is committed to bridging the digital divide especially among vulnerable communities,” Mr Correia said.

And British Council Zambia country director, Mr Wayne Harper said the British Council was delighted to partner with Airtel in the provision of ICT in the digital hubs that had been set up in various schools in Zambia.

Mr Harper said connectivity was one of the major challenges that had been affecting the utilisation of the hubs but with this partnership in place, Airtel was providing free data between 5GB and 15 GB per month to the various digital hubs.

He said connecting classrooms was a global programme that established and developed long-term, sustainable partnerships between Zambian schools and those in the UK.
