A 38-year-old man told a Local Court in Lusaka that his wife stopped cooking for him soon after he lost employment.
Osteen Mwangwesa of Makeni Villa was testifying in a case in which his wife, Sentia Moya, 36, a teacher sued him for divorce.
The two got married in 1998 and have five children.
Moya told Senior Court Magistrate Sarah Nyendwa sitting with Magistrates Ackim Phiri and Daniel Phiri at Kanyama Local Court that Moya said Mwangwesa had not cared for her since they left his parents’ place and that he only bought her a Chitenge material in 2004.
She explained that for 15 years Mwangwesa did not care for her and did not show her his pay slip.
When she fell pregnant she had to buy everything for the child on her own.
“Mwangwesa complains that I don’t cook for him when I am sick. He gets annoyed when I go to church. I want to divorce Mwangwesa because he doesn’t care for me I may die in the house,” said Moya.
In defence, Mwangwesa said that all was well when he was working but when his job contract was terminated Moya stopped cooking for him.

Asked by Moya if she did not cook for him, Mwangwesa said that she only did so when she wanted during the two years he had been out of employment.
In submission, Moya said that she wanted to divorce Mwangwesa so that she became free. Mwangwesa was opposed to the divorce because he feared children would suffer.
Magistrate Nyendwa said that Mwangwesa was stingy because he only bought Chitenge material for Moya in 2004.
She granted the couple divorce ordering Mwangwesa to compensate Moya with K8000 with initial payment of K1000 followed by monthly instalments of K300. He also ordered to be paying children maintenance of K500 per month. Property acquired together to be shared equally.
