POLICE in Chinsali have arrested five suspected robbers and recovered two fire- arms from them after they allegedly staged a robbery last Tuesday at Paul Mushindo University and brutally beat two policemen who were on duty.
Muchinga Province commissioner of police Auxensio Daka said the aggravated robbery happened around 00:47 hours at the university construction site.
“The motive of the criminals was to steal from the Chinese construction team which they suspected to have had money. This is the third time there has been a robbery at the site, hence officers have been deployed to guard the premises,” Mr Daka said.

 

He said two police officers only identified as constable Chilufya and constable Mwandu who were guarding the institution were brutally beaten by the armed robbers.
“Constable Mwandu sustained two deep cuts in the head and suspected fractured left hand. Chilufya sustained bruises on both hands,” he said.
Mr Daka said the robbers were armed with a shot gun and, and stole an AK47 rifle serial number 2417 with 28 rounds of ammunition.
He said investigations led the police to the recovery of the stolen police firearm and the shot gun the suspects allegedly used in the robbery.
“The two firearms were found in the house of a police reserve officer of Skills Compound in Chinsali,” Mr Daka said.
The police commissioner said the reserve police inspector is also a teacher at Chinsali Prisons School.
He said the suspects had used a Toyota Noah when carrying out the robbery.
Mr Daka said police apprehended Shula Chanda, 38, a peasant farmer of Kawama village, Daniel Chimbala, 35, a teacher and Moses Chishimba, 28, of Lubwa, who is a carpenter at Paul Mushindo University.
He said others are Benard Mwaba Kapolyo, 39, of Maluba village and Osward Mutale, 26, of Seed Farm in Chinsali.
Mr Daka said the suspects are in police custody pending further police action.
