A UNIVERSITY of Zambia natural sciences lecturer appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court on two counts of manslaughter.

Dr Gershom Chishimba appeared before magistrate Jennifer Bwalya for explanation of the charges.

It is alleged in the first count that Dr Chishimba on December 27, 2013 in Lusaka unlawfully caused the death of Greenford Mucheleng’anga.

The allegation in the second count is that Dr Chishimba on the same material day caused the death of Elias Chalwe.

Following the explanation of the charges, Dr Chishimba could not proceed to take plea because the matter can only be tried in the High Court.

And by press time, Dr Chishimba, who had been detained the previous day, remained in custody, awaiting a ruling on his bail application that had been denied initially.

Meanwhile, state prosecutors on Thursday applied to amend the indictment in the matter.
