A KITWE taxi driver has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for defiling a 12-year-old. This is in a matter where Richard Silwimba, 27, of H 4362 Chimwemwe was facing one count of defilement of a child. It is alleged that Silwimba on January 26, 2015 had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16. During trial at the lower court, the girl testified how Silwimba defiled her in his taxi. “On the material day, my mother came home with a taxi after she went to buy chicken feed. Mother gave me K20 and said I go with the taxi driver to get the change at a filing station. To my surprise, Silwimba sped on. I asked where he was going. He drove beyond and reached a bushy place where he stopped and put the car radio on full blast and locked the doors,” she said in court. “I started pleading to him not to do anything. He then pulled up my dress and ripped my pants. I was shouting but no one come to rescue.

He then unzipped his trousers… He made me lie face up, then he put my legs apart and had sex with me. It was painful and itchy. When he finished sex, he threw me out of the taxi and threw my pant and K10, my mother’s change.” Passing judgment, Kitwe High Court Judge Isaac Kamwendo said cases of defilement were on the rise. “These crimes are on the increase and I want to send a message to others. I will sentence you to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour,” pronounced Judge Kamwendo.
