18 political parties face ban

MINISTER of Home Affairs Davies Mwila has directed the Registrar of Societies to deregister political parties that have not been submitting financial statements and annual returns.
And Mr Mwila has directed the Office of the Registrar of Societies to issue default notices to all un-complying political organisations concerning the penalty charges.
This is according to a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday by Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson Moses Suwali.
Mr Mwila said out of the 52 registered political parties, only 26 have complied with the law while 18 have defaulted.
The minister said the remaining eight political parties will only be eligible to remit annual returns next year because they are new.
“It is disappointing that even after extending the period of submitting annual returns to April 2015, after the expiry of the stipulated deadline of March 31, 2015, some political parties have decided not to comply with the law.

And Mr Mwila advised political parties and other societies to ensure they register their branches in all provinces where they are represented in compliance with the Societies Act.
Mr Mwila also said the Office of the Registrar of Societies, in collaboration with the police and other security departments, will soon commence a random and vigorous inspection of all societies across the country to ensure compliance.
He said erring political parties and societies that fail to pay the penalty charges within the stipulated time contained in the default notices will be issued with notices of cancellation which will ultimately be followed by deregistration of such societies.
Mr Mwila said the Office of the Registrar of Societies is compiling a list of all defaulting political parties, churches and other societies which will soon be published in the media.
According to the Societies Act Chapter 119 of the Laws of Zambia, all societies registered under the Registrar of Societies are supposed to submit their financial statements and annual returns by March 31 of each year.
