THE Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) vice-president south Chabuka Kawesha has called on business houses to change their working schedule to adapt to the load-shedding time table if they are to remain profitable.
Dr Kawesha said adaptation to the load-shedding time table could avoid businesses being inconvenienced.
He said this recently at the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) social forum on ‘The impact of load shedding on the economy and cost of living’.
“Let’s stop politicising the issue of load shedding. As Zambians, we have developed a culture of politicising everything; even issues which are not caused by any individual… In terms of the energy sector, we are at cross-roads but out of this crisis, there are opportunities.

“We should develop a culture of working 24 hours. This is a call to small and medium entrepreneurs to change their working culture. If power will be available from 18:00 to 06:00 hours or from 06:00 to14:00 hours, your operational structure should be to that time when there is power rather than just complaining,” he said.
On the other hand, Dr Kawesha said Government, private sector and individuals should consider investing in alternative sources of energy in the next six years to address the challenge of power deficit.
“Within the next six years, it is a revolution we are going to evolve to alternative sources of energy. The private, individuals and SMEs have to play their role in making our country energy-sufficient,” he said.

  1. Its not as simple as just changing working times. There are large costs attached to working outside operating hours. And at the moment…no business house can afford to waste financial resources on very little turn over.
