AN ASIAN expatriate working at Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi has been crushed to death after the vehicle he was driving within the mining area was run over by a heavy-duty truck.
Both North-Western Province deputy commissioner of police Geoffrey Kunda and Kansanshi Mine public relations manager Godfrey Msiska confirmed the accident in separate interviews yesterday.

Mr Kunda identified the deceased as Andress Medina, 56.
Mr Kunda said the accident happened on Monday around 11:30 hours.
“Yes, we want to confirm that around 11:30 hours yesterday [Monday], at Kansanshi Mine, a man was run over by a mining truck as he was passing through the mining area, and he died on the spot,” he said.

He said the deceased, who was driving a Toyota Surf, registration number ACX 4046, was run over by a Hitachi truck 700. Police suspect Medina was trailing the heavy-duty truck and he met his fate when it started reversing.

Mr Kunda said the driver of the truck has not yet been identified but investigations into the matter have been instituted.
“It’s like they were following each other, and this truck started reversing, and ran over the vehicle, and the driver, Andress, died on the spot,” he said.
And Mr Msiska said the deceased was believed to be from the Philippines but could not give more details, saying the mine safety department was still investigating the matter.
“I can confirm that yesterday we had an accident which resulted in a fatality of a Filipino, Mr Andress Medina,” he said.
