Over 200 miners at Mindolo shaft in Kitwe were on Wednesday night trapped underground for over six hours after a power outage.

The miners who were working underground were only rescued on Thursday morning.

Kitwe District Commissioner Chanda Kabwe has told ZNBC news in Kitwe that by 02:52 hours on Thursday morning, 213 miners had come out of the underground shaft.

He said all the miners who were working underground at the time of the power outage were in a safe place with plenty of oxygen.

Power to the Mopani run Mindolo shaft went off around 19 hours, and attempts to restore power caused a fire at the substation supplying electricity to the shaft.

Mr Kabwe said an emergency response team from Copperbelt Energy Corporation, ZESCO and Mopani Copper Mines was immediately mobilized to ensure the safety of the miners.

The District Commissioner said he is happy that no life has been lost in the incident.

He told ZNBC news on Wednesday night that a comprehensive statement on what transpired would be issued this morning.
