Government has warned that any increase in bus fares beyond what was agreed upon with bus operators will be considered illegal.
Transport, Works, supply and communication Minister Yamfwa Mukanga says government is not against the increase in bus fares, but that bus operators should to stick to what they agreed with Government and representatives from the Bus and Taxi Drivers Association.

Mr. Mukanga says what was agreed upon is an increment of between 50 ngwee and one kwacha for local and 10 kwacha for long distances buses.
He says government understands the need for bus operators to increase bus fares, but that the increase should be within the agreed figures.
The Energy Regulation Board recently increased the pump price for petroleum products by K1.13 ngwee for petrol and K1.00 diesel, while Kerosene increased by 72 ngwee.
