End sexual cleansing, inheritance of widows – President Lungu

PRESIDENT Lungu has said traditional leaders have a responsibility to ensure that practices such as sexual cleansing, inheritance of widows, early marriages, which do not add value to people’s well-being, are discontinued.

Speaking when he officiated at the Lunda Lubanza traditional ceremony here yesterday, President Lungu said this is because traditional leaders are custodians of cultural heritage.
President Lungu said traditional ceremonies are an effective way of safeguarding Zambia’s cultural heritage. He said traditional ceremonies also provide a platform for dialogue between Government and the traditional leadership.

Sexual cleansing, inheritance of widows and early marriages are rife in some parts of Zambia.
President Lungu also said Government attaches importance to the promotion of the tourism industry for employment and wealth creation.

He highlighted some of the development projects being implemented in the district in various sectors including agriculture, health, education and roads.
“Government is also spearheading the implementation of the revised national decentralisation policy which is being carried out in phases. The process will culminate in some central government functions and staff being transferred,” he said.

And speaking on arrival in Lusaka yesterday, President Lungu said PF is assured of victory in the Lubansenshi and Solwezi parliamentary by-elections, KELVIN CHONGO reports.

He said he would have loved to have three victories again “but because of cowardice, somebody is chickening out and hiding behind procedures of legalities.”
“We would have loved to win three by-elections at once again, let them take me on if they want, they are cry-babies,” he said.
