FOUR Copperbelt University students were yesterday arrested and detained for petitioning President Edgar Lungu over the indefinite closure of the institution.

Copperbelt Students Union president Humphrey Mwenya confirmed the arrest of the students last evening.

“Four of our students have been arrested. What happened is that we wanted to petition the President through the District Commissioner but the police came in with force and we started running. We don’t know what this is now; our rights are being infringed as students. We just want CBU to be reopened, that is all,” he said.

Mwenya said the students are disappointed that the government seemed not interested in the education sector.

“Why should we fight for our education when it’s our right?

We demand that our friends are released or we will camp at the police so that all the students at CBU are arrested.

Why should the police arrest us when we just want to bring our issue to the attention of the President?

We don’t know where this country is going,” said Mwenya. “Just open CBU and stop arresting us.

This is our institution and we have been affected by this closure. Please open CBU.”

Education minister Micheal Kaingu closed CBU indefinitely after the lectures went on strike.

The lectures are demanding the resignation of the institution’s vice chancellor Professor Naison Ngoma and the entire management, for allegedly failing to run the institution.
