Zambia Youths Association in the Fight Against Corruption (ZYAFAC) has called on Education Minister Michael Kaingu to demonstrate true leadership and ensure the closure of the Copperbelt University is resolved once and for all.

ZYAFAC Executive Director Rickson Kanema in a statement says the continued closure of CBU is a litmus test for the Minister of Education to demonstrate to the appointing authority and the Zambian people that he has what it takes to run such a strategic ministry that is key to economic development of the country.

Mr Kanema states that his organization believes that if the Minister had exhibited true leadership from the time the strike begun, it could not have resulted in the closure of the institution.

He says the Minister should seriously reflect on his decision to prematurely close the Copperbelt University, taking into consideration the negative implications of such a decision on the academic calendar, making parents begin looking for more funds to compensate the time lost for their children.

Mr Kanema reminds the Education Minister that he was put in that position by the President on behalf of the Zambian people in order to help the ministry address all the challenges the education sector faces including those at CBU.

He states that the Minister’s decision to side with the CBU Management will make the matter more complicated, especially that the lecturers who are demanding the removal of the management are in the majority and have advanced valid reasons to back their demands.
