Archbishop Emeritus, Desmond Tutu, has undergone minor surgery to determine the status of an infection he has battled with for several weeks.

The 83-year old has been in and out of hospital in the last two weeks. Tutu was hospitalised after complaining of discomfort.

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation says his medical team is satisfied with the progress of his antibiotic treatment.

His daughter, Mpho Tutu, says he will remain in hospital for further observation. She says the infection is due to past treatment her father received for prostate cancer.

Doctors treating Tutu have given the assurance that his prostate cancer remains dormant. This follows reports that Tutu’s persistent infection is a consequence of past treatment for prostate cancer.

Former President, Thabo Mbeki, has visited Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu at a Cape Town hospital on Thursday.

Reverend Mpho Tutu says they have been moved by the support they’ve received in the past few weeks from people across the world.
