A 38-YEAR-OLD man of Choma, who pleaded guilty to shoplifting property worth over K2,000 has told the Choma Magistrates’ Court that an evil spirit allegedly entered him and compelled him to steal.

“An evil spirit entered me. I will never repeat what I did. I did not know what I was doing. Do not send me to jail because the conditions there are bad,” Rickson Hamanyanga, a general worker of Mwaponda said in mitigation.

Hamanyanga is charged with breaking into a building with intent to commit a crime.
Particulars of the offence are that between June 8, 2014 and February 29 this year in Choma, Hamanyanga broke into a shop and stole various food and grocery items and K1,000 cash, which all amounted to K2,803, property belonging to Chiko Siachiyola.

Hamanyanga appeared before magistrate Mbololwa Mukela on Monday for written facts.
Facts are that on June 28 around 20:00 hours, Mr Siachiyola locked his shop and secured all his merchandise and that two days later, he went to his shop and discovered that the door and locking system was tampered with and some goods missing.
The matter was reported to police and Hamanyanga was later apprehended.
