Rabies has broken out in chiefs Kazembe and Mwasephangwe areas in Lundazi district of Eastern Province and two people have since died from suspected rabies.

ZANIS in Lundazi report that Lundazi District Medical Officer Allan Chisenga disclosed this during Lundazi District Epidemic Preparedness, Prevention, Control and Management meeting in Lundazi yesterday.

Dr. Chisenga has since identified the two deceased victims as Fenally Nguni aged 52 of Chungu village and Isaac Phiri aged 13 of Kabilolo village, both of Chief Kazembe of Malambo valley in Lundazi district.
He disclosed that Nguni died on Monday this week while Phiri died on 30th June 2015 after they were both beaten by dogs suspected to have rabies.

He further disclosed that 34 people from various villages such as Jelema, Mandola, Luka, Kabilolo, and Chungu among others have been affected in chief Kazembe .

Dr. Chisenga said in chief Mwasephangwe’s area, only 10 people have been infected by rabies after being bitten by rabied dogs.

He named the villages as Lionde, Kamphala and Kampampa among others.

Meanwhile, Lundazi District Commissioner, Mukule Banda has since formed a Taskforce comprising of Ministry of Health, Council, Veterinary, ZAWA, Police, and Chiefs Affairs department, whose task is kill all rabied dogs in order to completely eradicate the disease.
