Councils ,almost bankrupt – Phiri

Local Government and Housing Minister John Phiri says most local authorities in the Country are almost bankrupt.
Dr. Phiri says the problem emerged when Government decided to withdraw issuance of grants to local authorities.

He says Government is considering many other options to ensure that local authorities have financial capacity to provide quality services.
Dr. Phiri says a memorandum is currently circulating among cabinet ministers to get comments on whether grants to local authorities can resume or not.
The Local Government Minister said this during questions for oral answers in Parliament on Tuesday.
