A 35-year-old peasant farmer of Kasama has committed suicide allegedly because of a poor beans harvest.

The incident comes barely a day after a Police officer took his life by shooting himself with an AK 47 rifle.
Northern Division Police Deputy Commissioner Alfred Nawa confirmed the development to ZANIS today saying the incident happened at Mufungufungu village of Chief Munkonge’s area in Kasama district.

Mr. Nawa identified the deceased as Obby Malama who committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree using a fiber after learning that his yield for this year was bad.
Mr Nawa explained that Malama had slaughtered a pig to give to the people in exchange for them to cultivate his beans field but his harvest was not what he expected.

Mr. Nawa said Police have since advised the bereaved family to bury the body as no foul play was suspected.

Meanwhile, Police have arrested 39-year-old Fabian Mutila of Kapoko Village in Kasama for allegedly raping an imbecile.

Mr. Nawa said the father to the victim David Chikonde reported the incident to the police after his daughter complained of body pains.

The suspect is in police custody and will appear in court soon.
