A combined team of police and Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) officers have impounded over 50 motor vehicles for various traffic offences in Kasama district of Northern Province.

Northern Division Police Deputy Commissioner, Alfred Nawa, confirmed the impounding of 54 motor vehicles to ZANIS in Kasama yesterday.

Mr Nawa said a combined team of officers from the two named organisations swung into action to start conducting operations in strategic check points to intercept and impound vehicles that are violating traffic rules in the area.

He explained that owners of the impounded vehicles have since been charged with various traffic offences ranging from careless driving, non-payment of road tax and overloading among others.

The Police Deputy Commissioner further said most of the vehicles were also found not to be road worthy.

He said the authority is not going to rest until the situation is contained as it is for the safety of people’s lives in the area.

Mr Nawa explained that this follows the recent increase in number of fatal road traffic accidents in the province.

He has since advised all those dealing in transportation business to adhere to traffic rules if they are to enjoy their operations.

Meanwhile, one of the vehicle owners, Kelvin Chanda, claimed that motorists were not happy about the action by the authority as some of the offences charged against them were not genuine.
