POLICE in Solwezi have arrested 14 people for allegedly being part of an instant justice mob which burnt a car that knocked down and injured a man at Kyawama market.
North-Western Province commissioner of police Grace Chipalila said in an interview yesterday that the accident happened on Saturday around 18:00 hours.
Ms Chipalila said the accident happened after the driver of a Toyota Ipsum, registration number ECV 7043, identified as Joe Chilombo of Rodwel Mwepu area in Chawama township, knocked down an unidentified man while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
She said the man sustained injuries and was taken to Solwezi General Hospital where he is admitted.
Ms Chipalila said an angry mob set the motor vehicle ablaze and 14 people were arrested in the fracas.
“After the accident happened, a mob at the market burnt the vehicle and we managed to apprehend 14 people to help with investigations,” Ms Chipalila said.
She described the condition of the injured man as stable and that police have arrested Mr Chilombo and charged him with dangerous driving.
She advised Solwezi residents to desist from taking the law into their own hands whenever a road traffic accident occurs.
“I want to warn members of the public, especially those from Kyawama, to stop taking the law into their own hands. If they want to assist the police, let them apprehend the suspect and surrender that person to us so that the law can takes its course instead of resorting to destroying private property,” Ms Chipalila said.
