About 30 government and private schools have been closed in Lusaka’s Kanyama constituency following the outbreak of typhoid in the area.

The schools have been closed because of insanitary conditions and in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20 of the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the laws of Zambia.

Some of the closed learning institutions are Good Shepherd Community School, Membe Community School, Arise and Shine Day care and Blue Bird School.

Meanwhile, the Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Health Department has intensified inspections in schools and eating places in the area following the typhoid outbreak.

And LCC has since warned members of the general public, schools and eating outlets to take preventive measures by ensuring that they maintain good hygiene and sanitation standards following typhoid outbreak in the area in order to avoid further outbreaks of the water borne disease.

This is contained in a statement released to ZANIS by LCC Public Relations Manager, Habeenzu Mulunda.
