MINISTRY OF SPORT OR MINISTRY OF FOOTBALL

Dear Editor ,

A few months ago, Hon Vincent Mwale was quoted saying “i am not a minister of football but minister of sport”.

This was a good statement, but evidence suggests the converse. It seems football is the only sport worth the salt.

I say so because after the disappointing jersey that Zambia Volleyball team wore at the just ended All Africa games qualifiers, a group of Volleyball players started a campaign to mobilize funds to buy the national team a jersey.

According to their calculations, if at least 300 members of the Zambia volleyball community donate K40 toward this cause, a full kit can be bought, each costing 40 pounds, before shipping.

As I write, people are starting to contribute. This initiative is not bad, but my question is, why is that government only spends on football?

Why do other sport disciplines have to fend for themselves?

Why cant we learn from South Africa, who take ALL sporting activities seriously?

SA is not the best in soccer but they invested in Basketball, Cricket and Rugby among other sports, which put them on the world map.

Sika
