96 fish mongers nabbed In Mpulungu District for illegal fishing

Police and the Fisheries department in Mpulungu District of the Northern Province have arrested Ninety six fishermen.
According to sources in the department of fisheries, the fishermen were arrested in a joint operation on Tuesday, 19th May 2015.
This was after they were found fishing illegally without licences contrary to the fisheries Act of 1974 Vol 6 CAP 314 of the Laws of Zambia.
The sources told ZANIS in Mpulungu District that illegal fishing on Lake Tanganyika has become rampant despite massive sensitisation programmes by the department to reverse the trend.
They said the fishers around the lake were using wrong methods of fishing which were detrimental to the ecosystem.
The 96 suspected illegal fishers are remanded in Police custody and will appear in court soon.
