MOUNT Meru Group of Companies has donated K40,000 to the Ministers’ Spouses Association for the purchase of 22 bunk beds for a mothers’ shelter at Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu.
Speaking during the donation on Friday, First Lady Esther Lungu said the donation will significantly help women nursing their children at the hospital because most of them undergo untold miseries in terms of places to sleep.
Mrs Lungu said in a speech read for her by Minister of Health Joseph Kasonde’s wife, Mary, that the donation by Mount Meru has come at the right time in efforts to alleviate the sufferings of nursing mothers at Lewanika General Hospital.
“The mothers’ shelter at Lewanika General Hospital is almost complete because we have already done the painting and we are just waiting to handover to the authorities. This donation therefore comes at a right time to help us buy bunk beds,” she said.

Mrs Lungu said ministers’ spouses have gone round the country to familiarise themselves with the conditions most women go through while nursing their loved ones at hospitals.
She said the ministers’ spouses are not sitting idly by and enjoying the comfort of their homes but are actively participating in bettering the wellbeing of nursing women.

Mrs Lungu said she is extremely delighted by the donation because it will go a long way in uplifting the conditions under which nursing women at Lewanika General Hospital are subjected to.

Earlier, wife of Minister of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda, Mary, said the ministers’ spouses have been going round the country in an effort to help people spending nights at hospitals.
Mrs Shamenda said the Association has rehabilitated mothers’ shelters at hospitals in Chipata and Kasama.

A member of the Mount Meru board of directors David Chaponda said the donation is part of the company’s coperate social responsibility on appreciation of the support they receive from the community.

Mr Chaponda said Mount Meru has in the recent past constructed classroom blocks at Katuba Basic School and feeds up to 400 children daily at the community school in the area.
