Yes, give me my constitution

Democratic Governance and Human Rights Advocates (DEGHA) says the plan by the Government to hold a referendum alongside the 2016 general election is against the wishes of the Zambian people.

DEGHA Executive Director Gerald Mitelo says what the people want is to have a people driven constitution as soon as possible.

Mr. Mitelo notes that the cry of the people is to have the 2016 elections held under a new constitution.

He says it is difficult to trust the government to give the people a constitution after 2016 if they have failed to do so now.

He adds that much as the people understand the challenge of resources in holding a referendum, the constitution is a serious and important matter which needs to be dealt with urgently.

Mr. Mitelo explains that much as the approval by Cabinet to introduce a bill in parliament to amend the Referendum Act shows some political will, the people want a new constitution as soon as possible.

He has further advised government to sit down with all stakeholders and resolve the issue of the constitution according so that whatever decision will be made will be in the interest of the people of Zambia.
