Youths an asset for development – Kalaba

— Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba has described youths in the country as an invaluable asset for the development of the nation.


Mr Kalaba says the Zambian population according to the 2010 census accounts for seventy percent of youths saying there cannot be any meaningful development that could take place in the country if youths are left out.
He says to actualize the value that government attaches to youths there is need for government and other stakeholders to devise ways to empower and improve the lives of young people across the country.


ZANIS reports that the Foreign Affairs Minister said this today when he officiated at this year’s Youth day commemorations in Mansa.


He said recognizing youths as significant players in the development of the nation government has continued including them in the governance system of the country as can be seen from the composition of government which has both the young and the old.


Mr Kalaba says government is implementing a number of programmes that target the youths and that in Luapula Province 104 youth groups and individuals have benefited from the Youth Development Fund.


He has since called on all the District Commissioners in Luapula province to secure land for building youths skills centres from Councils and Chiefs   in order to begin the process of actualizing the goal of government of constructing the infrastructure in all the 103 districts in the country.


He urged the youths to be focused and desist from divisive tendencies in all spheres of human development.


Earlier, Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Boniface Chibwali said government will continue implementing policies that are aimed at improving the welfare of youths.


And Dillan Mumba, a youth from Mansa said the youths in the district will remain united for the good cause of the country.


He however called on government to find ways of addressing the high levels of unemployment in the country.

Those present at this year youths day celebrations in Mansa where Luapula Province Minister Brigadier General Benson Kapaya,  Luapula Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Joyce Nsamba and Heads of government departments.


Zambians throughout the country today celebrated the Youth day under the theme; The Youth: Building a Stable and Sustainable Future.
